Sago Grubs
Saturday, April 30, 2005Just got nothing to do. Went to my grandpa longhouse. See what I do there.(To lazy to narrated the even) See for yourself.
We are looking for this

EEeee!!!! Worms... This is sago worm or genus of Rhinchophorus beetle. And It is not a worm. It’s a grub. This Rhinchophorus beetle will lay their eggs inside the rotten Sago tree( Metroxylon sagu or Metroxylon rumphii ) . Their young one is the cute little thing above. Eee....
Closer view.

Cute? Some people eat this stuff raw. OO... they can join Fear Factor. Yummy....

Where they grow up and eat.
Then

After a period of time they will make their cocoon from the fiber of the Sago tree. The cocoon is tight. You can hear the grub doing their stuff inside, the sound is like ‘grek..grek..grek..’ Maybe it’s saying “ I’m going to be a beautiful beetle”.
The processes of extracting the grubs.

You’ll need this machine to make the process faster. It’s a chainsaw. I am the one that doing all the chainsawing(bad English).

After you cut open the Sago tree trunk. Use your hand to search through the soft pith that is already rotten and eaten by the grubs. A sharp machete is helpful here. That is my grandpa doing the work.

“You keep snapping and I will put this grub in your mouth”
More pic!
Black and white. Just testing the camera function.

My cousin Gerald come to help.

"Kill you freaking grubs"

" 1, 2, 3, 4.. hey Gerald stop eating the grub raw. I want also"

I’ve never sweat like this before. Handling the chainsaw is making me sweat a lot. I think that is the result when you never do any exercise.

Cooking it. Clean them first. Then fried it, bake it, BBQ it, soup it. The best choice is to fried or BBQ it.
Did I eat it?
